  15. VAL VERDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CONTINUES REINVENTING SCHOOLS

  17. Val Verde prepares to open schools on Monday with three additional
  18. revolutionary learning and management environments.  Rancho Verde
  19. High School, El Potrero Elementary, and Tomas Rivera Middle School
  20. open with powerful NeXT workstations running NeXTstep on every
  21. teacher, administrator, and support staff desktops.  Each is
  22. connected to the District's fast ethernet network of fiber optic
  23. and the Internet.  All users have the ability to log onto the
  24. network from any workstation within the District.

  26. Rancho Verde High School currently has 83 workstations on all
  27. teacher desktops connected over a fiber optic backbone.  The site
  28. has installed over 4.5 miles of fiber and copper cable.  This
  29. advanced technology environment is coupled with the overall design
  30. of the campus as it won the state architectural school design award
  31. last year. Currently students use Mathematic notebooks at all
  32. mathematic levels to produce highly motivated students interested
  33. in advanced college math study.

  35. El Potrero Elementary opens with a NeXT workstation on every
  36. teacher desktop which students have constant access to.  Each
  37. classroom has capabilities for a workstation on every desktop, as
  38. do all schools with the network to the classroom.  As new systems
  39. are purchased all that is needed is for the workstation to be
  40. configured and added to the network.  El Potrero, as with all
  41. campuses in the District, has a fiber optic backbone with fiber
  42. also brought into each classroom, administrative offices and
  43. library.

  45. Tomas Rivera Middle School is newly constructed and draws upon the
  46. same rich technology design as other District sites.  It too has a
  47. NeXT workstation on every teacher desktop running NeXTstep.  The
  48. library has numerous workstations for students to use during class
  49. and independent visits.  The Interpersonal Computing Lab has 35
  50. Epson PCs running NeXTstep. Students will be using the Internet and
  51. Local Digital Libraries to promote higher order thinking and
  52. research and collaboration within several disciplines.

  54. Val Verde Unified School District has twelve sites all connected
  55. together in one seamless WAN.  The last three sites will have their
  56. classrooms connected during this school year.   Several agencies
  57. have commented that the infrastructure in the District is as well
  58. thought out and constructed to rival any corporate or federal
  59. installation.  The network conforms to IEEE 802.3 specifications
  60. and all components are running SNMP for network administration.

  62. The District is reinventing how it does business by eliminating
  63. paper memorandums, work-orders, purchase-orders, etc and instead
  64. use the network to improve upon these traditional methods.

  66. Students are using these tools to communicate with their teachers,
  67. adminstrators for the purpose of  developing group collaboration &
  68. communication skills.  Students are working with other students
  69. across the District in cross-age tutoring and research &
  70. development.  Additionally students are engaged in collaborative
  71. learning projects with students as far way as Japan and New
  72. Zealand.  Custom applications will be developed by the students
  73. using Interface Builder and C programming language.  The
  74. applications will not only improve the students understanding of
  75. how to design and build applications but provide additional
  76. applications for others to use and extend into their own learning
  77. environment.

  79. Val Verde Unified is located in Riverside County California.  The
  80. Superintendent is Dr. Leona Williams.  There are approximately 7600
  81. students attending the District's schools.
